the ‘Beat’ contribution

Blyth's books were ready meat for the 1960s "Beat" generation with their own interpretation of Zen, and in particular for its "guru", the American Jack Kerouac (1922–1969), who built his experimental haiku into novels, such as On the Road (1957). With exceptions, Kerouac's poems are nowadays thought of as rather naive versions of haiku.
